Prime Therapeutics leader recognized with PBMI Innovators Award
Nathan Downhour, senior vice president of strategic pharmacy solutions, led the implementation of Prime’s innovative Advocate+ care model
Pharmacy benefit management (PBM) leaders are at the forefront of addressing some of the most pressing issues facing the health care industry — including pharmacy access and affordability, and ways to reimagine the delivery chain to improve the care experience for patients and providers.
To acknowledge significant impact in these areas, the Pharmacy Benefit Management Institute (PBMI) recently named Prime Therapeutics (Prime)’s Senior Vice President of Strategic Pharmacy Solutions, Nathan Downhour, as among eight distinguished recipients of the inaugural PBMI Innovators Award.
This award recognizes Downhour’s contributions to the PBM industry, specifically through his leadership in developing and implementing Prime’s care model, including its Advocate+™ feature, which aims to deliver an exceptional specialty pharmacy experience, reduce drug costs and identify opportunities to lower total cost of care.
“Innovation starts with identifying opportunities to improve the norm, and at Prime, we knew there was a better way for patients to experience specialty pharmacy,” Downhour said. “We want patients navigating difficult diagnoses to have a simple health care journey with treatment that’s effective and affordable. Advocate+ empowers patients to fill their prescriptions at a best-fit pharmacy, supported by a team of care specialists, who walk patients through next steps, answer questions and support them through their treatment journey. More than 40,000 eligible members have accessed services under their benefit plan, resulting in more than $200 in average savings per prescription, according to internal data.
Downhour’s contributions to health care will be recognized at the 2025 PBMI Annual National Conference from Sept. 3–5 in Orlando, Florida.
