Key research takeaway: A recent study from Prime Therapeutics (Prime), which was presented at the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP) annual meeting, looked at how often chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR T) therapies and bispecific T-cell engager (BiTE) antibody therapies are used and how much they cost when administered in different settings — such as hospitals, outpatient clinics, doctors’ offices and at home.   

What Prime has to say: “Establishing safe, innovative delivery models for CAR T and BiTE therapies is an increasingly prominent priority in oncology, as these approaches are essential to expanding patient access to life‑saving treatments,” said Samantha Decker, PharmD, lead author and medical pharmacy clinical pharmacist at Prime. “Payers must closely track the sites of care where CAR T and BiTE therapies are delivered to support safe, cost‑effective access for the growing number of patients eligible for these therapies.”  

Further analysis: The use of these treatments is not only growing, but care is increasingly moving from hospitals to outpatient services, which are generally less expensive.  

Implications: This shift suggests providers are becoming more comfortable providing CAR T and BiTE treatments in an increasing number of settings, creating opportunities for payers to support safe, affordable care as access continues to expand.
