Navigating healthcare can be challenging and confusing. From understanding treatment options and costs to insurance coverage and what follow-up appointments are needed, patients often don’t receive the support they need in their treatment journey.

In fact, a recent survey by the American Academy of Physician Associates (AAPA) found that about 65% of U.S. adults find managing their care is “overwhelming” and “time-consuming,” with that number increasing to 76% among young adults aged 18–34.

That’s where Prime Therapeutics (Prime)’s Care Specialists program can help. Through this program, patients receive comprehensive support throughout their treatment with specialty medicine. Compassionate care specialists, who are pharmacists and nurses specifically trained in a patient’s condition, work one-on-one to help manage side effects, check dosage schedules and address questions. They also provide support for family members who want to be informed and aligned.

“We’re an extra layer of support for patients who are filling with a specialty pharmacy,” said Louise Frederick, RN, manager of care coordination. “What that looks like for us is that once a patient fills their prescription, our team connects with them to review education, discuss their disease state and diagnosis, and ensure that they have all the tools that they need to be successful with their therapy.”

In the latest episode of the “Pharmacy Friends” podcast, “Human-centered pharmacy: Putting the care in healthcare,” join host Maryam Tabatabai, PharmD, associate vice president of clinical information at Prime, and Frederick as they share how Prime’s Care Specialists program helps provide patients and caregivers with personalized support that builds trust.

According to a 2023 survey of patients enrolled in Prime’s program, 98% of respondents got the answers they needed about their meds. Ninety-six percent of patients felt supported by their care specialists.

“There are still a lot of gaps in their education and understanding about the medicine and their disease state,” Frederick said. “We fill in those gaps and provide that support, ensuring that they have all the tools for success to get the best results from the medicine that they’re taking to manage their disease condition.”
