How Prime supports families experiencing pediatric cancer

Learn how Prime champions cancer care through its industry-leading solutions, clinical insights, charitable giving and volunteer efforts

About 1 in 295 children in the United States will be diagnosed with cancer before they turn 20, according to the American Childhood Cancer Organization. Thanks to advances in oncology treatments, prognoses have improved, but survivors still face significant challenges when it comes to treatment.

Prime Therapeutics (Prime) is committed to providing the kind of care our employees would want for their loved ones. That approach guides Prime to build a better care system for children who are diagnosed with a life-altering condition like cancer.

Here’s how Prime helps make life-saving treatments more accessible and affordable and continues to support organizations committed to treating and empowering children with cancer.

Solutions to simplify cancer journey, lower drug costs

Receiving cancer treatment can be confusing and time-consuming. Prime helps simplify the patient journey and strives to lower drug costs for families — especially for those with children facing the condition.

One way Prime helps families impacted by cancer is by managing high-cost oncology medications, including those with pediatric indications. By negotiating drug prices, optimizing formularies, and working with health plans, Prime seeks to help families afford the treatments their children need. This includes:

  • Cost management strategies for specialty oncology drugs through products like HighTouchRx®.

  • Collaboration with providers and pharmacies across the treatment continuum through industry-leading and award-winning products like IntegratedRx® – Oncology.

  • Supportive solutions to guide treatment including Prime’s Care Specialists program, which supports families through their specialty treatment journey, helping to facilitate clear communication among the patient, family and health care provider to get everyone is on the same page.

Clinical strategy guidance

Prime’s clinical publications and expert perspectives equip health plans with the tools, resources and strategies to best manage childhood cancers. Through industry-leading reports such as the recent Prime Therapeutics Report, Prime shares insights on emerging therapies, regulatory updates and payer implications for oncology treatments, including those relevant to pediatric populations.

Abby Kim, PharmD, BCOP, senior principal clinical oncology pharmacist, also recently shared insights about cancer diagnoses trending younger in the inaugural “Oncology Trends” webcast, “The Rising Incidence of Cancer in Younger Populations and the Implications for Health Plans.”

“At Prime, our team is dedicated to keeping our finger on the pulse of emerging trends, focusing on helping you better understand what a changing oncology landscape means to you,” Kim said.

Shine Bright: Prime supports charitable efforts

Children’s Minnesota, one of the largest nonprofit health systems for comprehensive pediatric care in the Midwest, is one of Prime’s five strategic charity partners. Last year, Prime contributed $25,000 to Children’s Minnesota’s Shine Bright for Kids campaign, an annual initiative to raise money for the hospital’s cancer and blood disorders program, which serves more than 3,500 children every year. Prime’s contributions help children facing cancer receive care that goes beyond medicine — including emotional, social and financial needs.

“Our work with Children’s Minnesota shows how corporate philanthropy and health care innovation can work together to support children who are diagnosed with conditions as horrible as cancer,” said Erin Feigal, chief human resources officer. “Prime is proud to work toward a future where every child has access to the care, compassion and treatment they need to live healthy, fulfilling and happy lives.”

Employee volunteer opportunities

Prime encourages its employees to give back through its PrimeCares program, which empowers employees to donate, volunteer and participate in charitable events. Employees who volunteer regularly can request grants of $125 per eight hours of service, up to $500 annually, for the nonprofits they support.

“I support Children’s Minnesota because my daughter has undergone three open-heart surgeries in their care, and their incredible team gave me the gift of watching her grow and thrive,” said Courtney Giese, senior business integration consultant at Prime. “Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to give back by volunteering at fundraising events — such as walks and galas, making hygiene kits and tie blankets for patients and families, serving dinners at the Ronald McDonald House or delivering snacks and coffee to family lounges. I’m proud to work for a company that supports an organization that has given so much to my family and countless others.”

“Over the past nearly 20 years I’ve been at Prime, I’ve had the chance to support Children’s Minnesota by attending fundraising events, volunteering at holiday celebrations in the Child Life Zone, preparing meals at the Ronald McDonald House, and coordinating monthly snack donations to their Family Resource Center rooms through our PrimeCares program,” said Andy Johnson, senior systems process analyst at Prime. “Through those experiences — and the moments my own kids have had at Children’s — I’ve seen firsthand how vital their work is. They provide compassionate care and support to families when they need it most. Supporting organizations like Children’s Minnesota helps ensure every child has access to the care they deserve, and I’m proud to be part of a company that makes that possible and encourages us to give back in ways that truly matter.”
