A Prime Therapeutics research poster presented at the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research (ISPOR) explores the cost impact of GLP-1 medications, offering critical insights for payers and providers

The growing use of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist medications to treat obesity has raised questions about their broader impact on prescription drug spending. A recent study by Prime Therapeutics (Prime) compared three-year, non-GLP-1 pharmacy spending between those who initiated GLP-1 therapy and matched controls, assessing whether use of GLP-1 medications changes pharmacy spending on other medications. This research addresses a critical evidence gap for payers by evaluating whether GLP-1 treatments may offset or increase overall pharmacy costs through changes in comorbidity and side effect management, informing future coverage and affordability decisions.
