   Who is Prime Therapeutics?

Our purpose is to help people get the medicine they need to feel better and live well.

Formed in 1998 by two Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans, we’ve grown steadily and now partner with 18 Blue Plan owner clients. This unique ownership structure makes it possible for us to remain absolutely committed to the health of the members we serve. We believe in a health benefits landscape founded on fairness and focused on outcomes.

And in order for more people to benefit from the advances in pharmacy, we are dedicated to defining what’s next in total drug management.

Today, we manage pharmacy benefits for more than 28 million members through our relationships with health plans, employers, and government programs, including Medicare and Medicaid.

These savings are a result of our drug management offerings across all books of business.

  • Commercial clients saw a 3.3 percent trend
  • Medicare Part D plans realized a 4.7 percent trend 
  • Medicaid trend was 7.3 percent.

Health care is complex. And pharmacy is only one part of the equation. Because Prime is linked with leading health plans across the nation, we have access to both pharmacy and medical data. This allows us to see — and solve — issues invisible to other PBMs. Our total drug management solutions help clients make informed decisions about how to achieve better health outcomes at the lowest total cost.

Created to collaborate

Prime was created and is still owned by not-for-profit Blue Cross and Blue Shield Plans. This lets us stay focused on outcomes, not income. Our superior partnership model is based on trust and a mutual desire to do what’s best for our shared members.  

We took our partnership mindset to new places when we formed an industry-changing alliance with Walgreens. This powerful collaboration of pharmacy (Walgreens), PBM (Prime) and health plans (Prime clients) delivers value for plan sponsors and members. The flurry of recent PBM-plan-pharmacy acquisitions and mergers suggests that the industry agrees — our model is the one to imitate.
