Jim DuCharme is president and chief executive officer of Prime Therapeutics. Prime Therapeutics is the fifth largest pharmacy benefit manager in the United States with over 3,000 employees across eight locations. Prime serves over 27 million members and it grew by over 30% over the past two years, the result of adding two new Blue Cross and Blue Shield clients and owners as well as the Federal Employee Program’s specialty prescription benefit management program with over 5.3 million lives.
With more than 30 years of experience in pharmacy benefit management and health plan management, DuCharme has a deep understanding of health plan operations and the value that integrated care offers to Prime’s members, owners and clients. In particular, Prime is focused on optimizing total drug cost management under both the medical and pharmacy benefit.
Prime’s success is based on the company’s unique business model which is fully transparent. Prime is collectively owned by 18 nonprofit Blue Cross and Blue Shield health plans and serves 22 Blue Plans as well as employer groups and smaller PBMs. Prime’s vision is to be the destination PBM for all Blue Cross Blue Shield Plans offering industry drug cost management solutions in a trustworthy, lowest net cost business model.
Prime Therapeutics also partnered with Walgreens Boots Alliance under DuCharme’s leadership to form a transformative strategic alliance that joins Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans with their pharmacy benefit manager (Prime) and with the nation’s leading retail pharmacy network (Walgreens) in managing and reducing overall drug costs through a fully integrated model. Prime Therapeutics and Walgreens Boots Alliance also formed AllianceRx Walgreens Prime, a joint venture that combines and operates each company’s central-fill pharmacy assets into a jointly owned pharmacy operation that fills over $14 billion in prescription drugs annually across seven dispensing locations.
Prime Therapeutics has been recognized as a leader in drug cost management and as an employer of choice, earning awards such as ‘Forbes 2017 America’s Best Mid-Size Employers” and “Inc 5000 List of Fastest Growing Companies 2017”. Prime also received the highest rating in overall customer satisfaction according to this year’s PBMI customer satisfaction report.
DuCharme joined Prime in 2012 as chief financial officer (CFO). Before coming to Prime, he served as CFO and treasurer for Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, Capital District Physicians’ Health Plan, and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Vermont. Earlier in his career, DuCharme held finance positions at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Massachusetts.
DuCharme received his Master of Business Administration in corporate finance from the University of Pittsburgh and his bachelor’s degree in political science and economics from Dickinson College. He is a certified public accountant as well as a certified management accountant.
