PRIMENATIONALSM FORMULARY

The PrimeNational Formulary is a list of prescription drugs and supplies that reflect the current recommendations of the Prime Therapeutics Pharmacy and Therapeutics (P&T) Committee. The P&T Committee consists of physicians and pharmacists dedicated to providing patients with high-quality, cost-effective drug therapy. The P&T Committee meets regularly to maintain an up-to-date and comprehensive formulary that follows current medical practices. Drugs are selected for addition to the formulary after considering safety, efficacy, uniqueness and cost.

You can view a list of formulary drugs through this site. Drugs that are not included are non-formulary. The P&T Committee may choose not to add a drug to the formulary due to safety or efficacy concerns, or because a clinically similar and more cost-effective drug is already on the formulary. Recently marketed drugs are non-formulary until reviewed by the P&T Committee.

Coverage of drugs and supplies may vary depending on the prescription benefit provided by the member’s health plan. Members may be required to pay more for non-formulary drugs. In addition, some categories of drugs – such as those indicated for cosmetic purposes – may be excluded from coverage.

Generic drugs are as safe and effective as their brand-name counterparts, but are usually less expensive. To encourage use of generic drugs, brand-name formulary drugs typically are removed from the formulary when a generic version becomes available and is added to the formulary.

An effective method to help control health care costs is to prescribe drugs found on the PrimeNational Formulary, particularly those available generically. When a generic is not available, please consider the use of a brand-name drug on the PrimeNational Formulary.
